Scientists Can Cook!

I love working as a scientist for many reasons - it can be tough... the hours are long and the work can be frustrating but the people are great. In spite of common stereotypes there is no set mould for a scientist - we are as diverse a group of people as you are likely to find. We tend to be a little eccentric and are often blessed with an almost pathological grasp of logic, but when it comes to food it's always the same... We do well! The correlation is taken so seriously in fact that it has even found its way into the selection process for new PhD students! One student in interview almost did himself an injustice with an overly critical assessment of his cookie making skills... This thankfully was overlooked as he turned out to be a wonderful baker as well as a pretty awesome human being... he didn't make a bad scientist either!

Food Fest - 12th May 2012

The remit of food fest was simple - everyone brings a little bit of something they cook well. Everyone we spoke to, as we expected, told us they couldn't cook - which was of course a big fat lie! Word spread fast and before we knew it we had a house full - in fact more than a house full - praying for sun the people and food started to pour in. The standard was exceptional and the diversity of the scientific community turned out to be key - we were blessed with food from every corner of the globe. We had scones with clotted cream from England, samosas and chutney from India, spring rolls and battered pork from China and Manchester eggs from well, Manchester to mention but a few. Great food washed down with a keg of UBU from our local award-winning brewery Purity made for a fantastic evening! - Thank you to all those who contributed!
